When fat skis started hitting shelves internationally, Alex wanted them bad, but they were scarce. Finally, he took matters into his own hands and decided make them himself. The first step was to take apart his only pair of skis and cut them into 86 pieces to see what was inside. Taking his knowledge from 14 years at the tuning bench, Alex set to work creating his own fat skis!
The first press was made of two pieces of rolled steel sandwiched together with car jacks. Though the start was rough, the aim had always been to make the highest quality skis possible. Alex was convinced skis could be better, stronger, more durable. He wasn’t willing to put his name to them unless they were the best ski he could imagine.
And he experimented with everything until he got it right.
The first ski was good, ski-able and strong. The hard part wasn’t making a ski… it was making a great ski. Though the first pair was good, It took 3 more years to make them great.
And after three years of R&D, Kingswood Skis hit the market in June 2005!
They found the very best materials, created the most solid construction techniques and backed it all up with a two-year warranty. After two years of selling skis, Kingswood haven’t received a single ski return.
So what about the Skis themselves?
Fat skis equal more fun. They provide an easier ski and greater enjoyment when powder skiing. The fat ski revolution was very much about taking a nod from snowboarding, using the concept of larger surface area to float in powder.
Kingswood’s current models include the skinny, Archetype, fat, megafat, and the arrowsmith. We think the megafat is the fattest ski you can buy in the world. All Kingswood Skis are constructed using traditional sidewall construction and all the best materials (including sustainable bamboo, carbon fibre, p-tex 2000).
Each pair is hand made to order by a perfectionist craftsman. Kingswood sis also currently offering a limited edition snowflake topsheet, featuring real snowflake images taken by a US physicist using a photo microscope. Beauuuutiful.
