Jose Gonzalez at Peregrine Winery 10 January 08
Queenstown turned out a stunner of a day for the annual concert at the Peregrine Winery. The cherubic Ragamuffin Children started proceedings, and were followed by the electronic stylings of Module then Rhian Sheehan. As the day progressed, the audience rolled out across the grass and up the steep rise, with wine bottles rolling chaotically back down again. The Haints of Dean Hall and the Nairobi Trio were more than just competent, but all those assembled were only waiting for one man and his guitar. If there was one thing that people who saw Gonzalez play agreed on, it was the amazement and disbelief that he could produce so much sound simply with his guitar and voice. He utilised these instruments to power through a stunning set, with his usual smattering of covers, and clever originals. It was a wonderful end to a superb day at a remarkable site. James Dann |
