The application for the 1986 licence is not on file, however, the authorisation issued was on essentially the same terms and conditions as the previous year.
Of significance, however, was the frequency on which the station should operate, now 90.50MHz.
The period of broadcast was from 16 February 1986 through to 28 September 1986 (ie. Just prior to University exam study periods). The licence was again framed on a series of 28 day broadcast periods which was obviously reflective of the legislative provisions at the time (ie. that short term 28 day licences could be issued and were not limited to one only per station and could therefore be issued on a multiple basis).
The station did not operate or did not broadcast between 1am and 7am on weekdays and did not start until 9am on weekends.
The station created a fact sheet entitled “Facts About Radio U FM 1986” which notified people that Radio U will be broadcasting on 90.50FM frequency. That Radio U is one of a network of six student radio stations in New Zealand. RDU offers a comprehensive student information service.

Tuesday – Import show 6 till 8, Jazz show 8 till 10

Saturday – Children’s show 9 till 12am
Alternating specials – 5 till 7pm
Request show – 10 till 1am
Sunday – classical show 4 till 7pm, showbiz show 7 till 9pm, new music show 9 till 1am

In July 1986 the telecommunications division of Post Office headquarters wrote to the Independent Broadcasters’ Association head, Mr Brett Impey, in relation to the assignment of FM broadcasting frequencies.
They sought to codify the process of making FM broadcasting frequency assignments in the 89 to 100 MHz FM band and sought to “ensure that the process is known to all who are interested and that there is no possibility that one applicant could be favoured over others.”
The letter set out the approach that the Post Office would like to introduce as soon as possible in its pamphlet RB20.
The band 93 to 100 MHz, which had been used by the Land Mobile Radio Telephone Service, was to be cleared to enable radio broadcasters licences within this range.
On 12 August 1986 Radio U sought to further extend its broadcast in 1986 beyond its 28 September expiry date through until November 9. The application noted that while the University year ends on 10 October, “examinations and other student related activities continue well after this date”.
It was suggested that the continuation of programmes and information services until November 9 “will help to alleviate the unavoidable pressure of examinations. This extension was also sought to “help to bring Radio U FM into line with the other five student radio stations in the country, whose broadcasts continue well into November or December.”
